"Yesterday, Governor Paterson threw a hugh goose into the hind end of the most sacred cow in upstate New York....Consolidation of small (under 1000) school districts. The double whammy comes from Washington, with the announcement of Michelle Rhee as Education Czar. She hates tenure, inept teachers and administrators, and bloat in the education system. What about it? The Purple Knights? The Red Ghosts?  Is this the death knell of the misguided concept of "local identity" in our schools?  Would our children be better off being delivered to a school with  real labs, language facilities, actual choice in major fields of study, etc, etc? On the six o'clock news, Superintendant Whitney of LaFargeville Central, has already invoked the sad refrain, "our children are Red Knights, it's on their shirts, it's in their souls, what about that?" Translation: "SH#T! There goes my fat job in a little school!" I'm sure the head Purple Ghost will have an equally idiotic refrain on tomorrow's news show. Well, how about it? Anybody got something to add, refute, condemn, rejoice about? Does local identity cost you a lot in propertytaxes? Is it worth it?"
