This afternoon around 4:20 PM the ship known as the Chestnut lost it's steering just before Alexandria Bay while going downriver.. The ship apparently managed to drift a while without hitting anything.. the captain then managed to U-turn the entire ship around (almost 3 point turn style) right in the middle of the channel using just thrust, reverse, and river current. An eyewitness said it was the craziest thing he had ever seen involving a laker on the river and that it was as if the ship was just turning into someone's camp to have a beer, but it just kept turning and eventually anchored. No horns were blown. no alarms were going off, no nothing.. and the river was calm like glass..
Anyway.. the ship is currently anchored crooked out in the middle of the channel with it's stern near Ina Island and it's bow facing Carnegie Bay. We have some video of the ship, but unfortunatly we do not have video of the 180 degree maneuver. The vibe over the boating scanner as this went down was one of extreme relief as it sounded like the Captain was ready to "shit his pants"..
Now, I'm sure a more detailed report will be out tomorrow, but this was my take on the whole situation. I'll link to more news as it is available..
Watch the video down below.. I say the ship is carrying "grain or something" in the video, but my source listening to the scanner said he heard them sayit is loaded with Soy.
