Approximately 30 regional scuba divers descended on the Upper James St dock and the site at the Scuba Park to conduct an Underwater Clean Up as part of PADI's Project Aware and International Clean Up Day. Organized by Delta Divers of Rome, NY, divers from 11 to 60 years old were recruited to scour the bottom for any trash and debris that may have found it way into our local waters. The divers found cell phones, beer cans, bottles as well as a shopping cart.

Project AWARE Foundation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to conserving underwater environments through education, advocacy and action. With headquarters in the United States and offices in Australia, Japan, Switzerland and United Kingdom, Project AWARE combats challenges facing aquatic resources in 175 countries and territories with direct support from divers and water enthusiasts worldwide. International Cleanup Day is held annually on the 3rd Saturday in September but cleanup and data activities are supported by Project AWARE, partners and volunteers on an ongoing basis. According to Dave Hinman, owner of Delta Divers, this is the seventh year in a row that Delta Divers has organized this event. Last year, he was able to secure a $1,000 grant to the Village of Alexandria Bay from Project Aware for the historical plaque at the Scuba Park.
After the clean up, the divers held a Underwater Treasure Hunt which included prizes from Uncle Sam's Boat Tours, The Antique Boat Museum, Thousand Island Dive Excursion, Hunt's Dive Shop, The Clipper Inn, Otter Creek Inn, PJ's Motel, PADI, and Aqualung.
