Right now is one of my favorite times of year, Ski Season... and one of my favorite ways to get my body ready for the slopes is by going on long walks out in the cold.
My favorite time to do this late at night and the nastier the weather the better. I gear up in my snow gear, listen to Pandora Radio on My droid X, and just go until I get sick of it. It's just me, the darkness, the cold, and my music.. and I love it. Sometimes I even take my snowshoes with me in a backpack so I can use them while out at the school or the golf course. I try to go for at least a couple hours and make things harder each time. After a couple weeks of this I add in a bit of running. It all depends on when I feel I am ready for that. Endurance is the name of the game, but for me it's also very relaxing. It's my time to enjoy fresh air and get away from people.
An application called RUNNER on my Droid X keeps track of everything for me. Being able to use my Android phone to track my route and total distance traveled makes all of this a lot more fun. I just ordered a bluetooth heart monitor called the Zephyr HxM which will allow me to track and monitor my heart rate the entire time and I can't wait to try that out.
Below are maps and stats of my 1st 2 nights of doing this.
Last night I was snowshoeing for the 1st 2 1/2 miles and I walked the rest. My total time walking was 2 hours 5 minutes and I travelled 4.16 miles. The calories burned are not accurate because the app doesn't know I was snowshoeing. Obviously when you're wearing snowshoes you're walking more slowly and really picking your feet up with each step. I definetly burned 1200 or more calories on this trip and when I got home I felt awesome. Keep in mind I'm currently 6'1 295 lbs. The heavier you are the more calories you burn.
The night before I actually went on two seperate walks.. the 1st one only being 15 minutes as I had to stop back to the house real quick and grab my GoPRO camera..
Perhaps all of this will inspire some of my more lazy abaynews.com visitors to start doing a little exercise. :)
